About Me

My name is Matt Buko – a mural artist and designer out of Illinois and I have been creating since as far back as I can remember. I have dabbled in many mediums – clay, paint, woodworking, and many more – but I began my professional art career as a tattoo artist. It was my dream career since I saw my first Japanese traditional body suit. I knew eventually I would find myself tattooing and I’m grateful that I had my start there. It helped me build a foundation for my style!

While still love drawing tattoo inspired art (and would love to paint more of this), my style usually contains solid outlines, bright vibrant colors, and a playful theme – leaning more towards a cartoon-y vibe! This is not my only style, just the one I have the most fun designing. I am more than happy to design anything – regardless if you it contains an outline or not!

I am also a resident artist at Gallery 200 in West Chicago, where my work rotates on display year-round. I enjoy working on fine art as well and will happily take on painting projects that aren’t directly on a wall, as well!

FAQs

General FAQs

What services do you offer?
I specialize in murals, commissions, graphic design, advertisements, window paintings, and more. If you have a unique request, feel free to reach out—I’m always open to new creative projects!
Where are you located?
I am based in Illinois but offer services beyond my local area.
How do you determine pricing?
Pricing depends on several factors, including location, surface type (prep/finish required), obstacles, design complexity, and rush orders. My standard rate ranges from $10–$20 per square foot.
How long does it take to complete a mural or commission?
From initial concept to completion, projects typically take 3–5 weeks. This includes the design phase, revisions, and painting time.
Do you require a deposit? If so, how much?
Yes, a deposit of 50% is required to begin work. This covers drawing costs and ensures commitment.
Do you travel for projects? If so, how far?
Yes! I am open to travel for projects. While travel costs are primarily my responsibility, a travel fee is included in the project estimate to account for the time away from my business and additional expenses.
What type of surfaces can you paint on?
I can paint on almost any surface, but highly textured or corrugated surfaces may require simpler designs to ensure quality results.
Do you offer digital artwork or graphic design services?
I offer graphic design services for logos, branding, and other digital projects. Please reach out to discuss your specific needs.
Can you replicate an existing design, logo, or artwork?
I will only replicate my designs for reproduction prints or stickers sold through my shop. Custom designs for murals or commissions are unique to each client. Additionally, I can paint or incorporate a company's logo or other owned imagery into these custom projects to suit the specific needs of the client.
Do you take on commercial projects or work with businesses?
Yes! I have worked with both large international companies and independent business owners. No project is too big or small.

Project Process

How does the mural/commission process work from start to finish?
  • Free Consultation: We discuss your vision, space, and ideas (virtually or in person).
  • Design Phase: I provide two fully-rendered designs for you to choose from.
  • Revisions: You get two revision periods to fine-tune the design.
  • Scheduling: We set a start date that works best for you.
  • Painting: I complete the artwork within the agreed timeframe.
  • Final Approval & Payment: Once completed, the final payment is due.

Can you help with design ideas if I don’t know exactly what I want?
The more creative freedom, the better! To ensure the best outcome, I request:
  • Three designs you love (or elements you like).
  • Three designs you dislike, with explanations.
This helps me align with your vision efficiently.
What if I need changes to the design after we’ve started?
Any changes made after painting begins count as an additional revision period—even if you have unused revisions from the design phase. Adjustments at this stage require more time and resources.
How do you ensure durability and longevity of your murals?
Depending on the surface and location, I ensure proper prep work before painting and apply UV-protective coatings afterward for durability.
Do you offer protective coatings or finishes for murals?
Yes, but protective coatings are an additional expense since I do not stock all varieties in-house. If you need extra protection, we can discuss the best options for your project.
Can your murals be removed or painted over later?
Window paintings can be removed easily. Wall murals require priming and repainting to cover them.

Payments, Policies, and Logistics

What payment methods do you accept?
  • Online: Credit/debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Woo Payments.
  • In-person: Credit/debit cards, Apple Pay, and cash.
What happens if the weather affects an outdoor mural project?
Weather may affect the end date, but changes in weather will be prepared for! Anything that has changed before the completion of the project can be fixed easily if necessary!
Do you offer refunds or returns?
There are no refunds or returns. Multiple revion periods correct this issue. I will not provide a design that I can not complete as shown. All sales are final.
